Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Gaggia 35008 Carezza Espresso Machine, SilverCustomer Review: Three Years of Creamy Lattes -- and Still Frothing! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought the Gaggia 35008 Carezza in October of 2004. Personally, I bought it because I wanted to be able to make frothy lattes (not plain espresso). This machine does the job (better than some coffee houses, IMHO)--and it has for three years now!
When mine arrived, it came with two booklets: One on how to use the machine itself, and a more general one on how to make great lattes. Plus, it included a link to a Web site that has helpful advice on the art of creating lattes. Here are a few tips:
----
Read the manual, and follow the cleaning instructions as recommended. (I use Cleancaf Cleaner and Descaler as a cleaner/descaler.)
Use a burr grinder. (For me, the Capresso 560 Infinity Burr Grinder, Black works fine. I got the silver model a few years ago.)
Start with a cold (refrigerated) frothing pitcher and milk.
The steam wand has low clearance, but it rotates out in front of the machine. So (as others have mentioned previously), if you keep the machine near the front of the counter, you can move the pitcher around freely in the open space beyond the edge of the counter.
Read articles on the Web to learn the right techniques for making great espresso and lattes. Just search the Web for something like "art of making lattes love" and you'll find a bunch of useful links.
----
Regarding the filter height, I guess it's just a matter of expectations. Here are mine:
A college dorm room one-cup coffee maker is designed to hold a normal cup.
A full-size coffee machine is designed to hold a full-size coffee pot.
An espresso machine is designed to hold an espresso cup.
Every now and then, the froth/foam stops being thick. In most cases, cleaning (per the instructions) solves this. But sometimes something stays clogged and normal cleaning doesn't solve the problem. So, either I take it apart more and flush it out, or I just live with steamed milk for a bit until the clog clears itself out. Then the machine goes back to making thick, creamy foam just the way I like it.
The silver (plastic) housing still looks new to me after 3 years. But the removable grille (where the cup sits) is laminated with a rubbery material. Over time (and after some hot spills), it has bubbled and separated a bit from the grille. So, that piece doesn't look new. (I don't know if it can be replaced.)
Three years now, and still satisfied with my purchase!
