Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Gaggia 16100 Evolution Home Espresso Cappuccino Machine, BlackCustomer Review: Incredible machine for the money...Buh Bye StarBuck$$$$$ Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this machine a little over two weeks ago - after many years of debating with myself the virtues of owning my own espresso machine. Finally I was ready to purchase and read many reviews on many different machines at different price points. Although not all reviews for this machine were stellar...many of them were favorable, and those favorable reviews were from those who have had machines and / or been making espresso at home for many years.
My sister-in-law's family owned a restaurant when they came over from Italy and they had a Gaggia machine...so after much reading that is the brand I decided to buy. Although I am a novice and will be for quite some time...this machine has made me swear to never buy another overpriced underwhelming espresso or cappuccino from Starbuck$$ (or the likes of them) ever again. When it is this easy to make good, rich espresso and cappuccinos at home, who would pay the $6.00 plus a paper cup (and now I realize that is mostly for over worked and awful tasting foam!)?
What I like about the machine so far:
- Great price point
- Well made for the price point
- Heats up quickly and cleans up easily
- Quiet in its operation - this is not to say it is silent, but reasonable for the function it is performing.
- Makes incredible crema rich espresso as long as you use the right coffee with the right grind. Also, different variations of espresso grind can be compensated for by varying the pressure by which you tamp the grinds before extraction. Buying a nice solid metal tamper is key!
- Water can be added while using the machine without the need to re-prime every time.
- Steam galore and with the included frothing attachment that perfectly aerates the milk - micro-creamy sweet foam is easily and consistently available.
- Easy to learn to use, even for a novice beginner.
What I find as challenges being a beginner:
- Getting used to the finicky extraction if the grind and coffee are not just right. I understand this is always a challenge until you know your machine - but I have tried several different brands etc. and do agree that this machine can be a bit finicky - but when it's right - it is very right indeed!
- The frothing attachment is very low and inflexible so unless that side of the machine is on the end of a counter, or otherwise, frothing would be a real challenge. It should be mounted higher for ease of use but this just takes getting used to and is by no means a reason not to buy this machine.
- Milk temperature can be a bit on the lower side due to the frothing attachment being so efficient and quick at making incredibly good froth. I find that if I let the attachment first create the froth I need, then let it stay an additional few seconds towards the bottom, the temperature is acceptable. Otherwise it froths like there is no tomorrow and never having frothed my own milk - it makes it a breeze to make creamy silky smooth sweet micro froth every time.
I have read that many who have reviewed the machine consider it too light a weight for the force necessary to secure the portafilter. So naturally, when I received the machine, the first thing I did was put it on the counter and tried to attach said portafilter. I found it was very tough to secure using both hands (one to turn the portafilter and the other to hold the machine). I did find that after using it once or twice and letting the portafilter preheat on the machine for at least 15 minutes the first few times, securing it has become a piece of cake.
I am extremely happy with my decision to buy the Gaggia Evolution and find each time I use it I learn more about creating a good pull and enjoy each shot more and more. It also made me realize that unless you are in Italy there is no way a chain of over-roasters can come close to creating a good espresso or cappuccino (or any other coffee drink for that matter). I never realize how incredible the right micro frothed milk foam could add to the cappuccino experience. I just think of all that money wasted on sub standard coffee drinks!
As for this beginner...onward and upward! I am sure as I learn more about the extraction process I will only enjoy this machine and the product it produces more and more.
